Free SSL certificate checker
Type in a web address and we'll check whether the padlock (HTTPS) is working, whether browsers trust your certificate, and whether visitors who type http:// are sent to the secure version. Results are in plain English, with a simple step to fix each one. It's free, and we don't keep your results.
What this checks
- Security certificate (HTTPS): whether the padlock is working and browsers trust the certificate for that address.
- HTTPS redirect: whether visitors who type http:// are sent permanently to https://.
This is a passive look at the certificate and redirects a normal browser would see. It isn't a full TLS or cipher audit.
This is a passive, light-touch check. It only reads what a normal browser visit and public DNS can see. It isn't a security test, a penetration test or a guarantee.
Check a site
Checking your site… This usually takes under a minute.
What your result means
Security certificate (HTTPS)
- Pass: Your padlock is working, and browsers trust your certificate.
- Needs fixing: We couldn't open a secure connection to your site. Your certificate may have run out, may not match your web address, or may not be trusted, so visitors may see a warning page instead of your site.
- How to fix: Ask your web host to renew or reissue the certificate for your exact address, including the www version, and to turn on automatic renewal. Many hosts include free certificates. To see when your certificate runs out, click the icon just left of the web address in your browser.
HTTPS redirect
- Pass: Visitors who type http:// are sent to the secure https:// version.
- Worth a look: Visitors are moved to https://, but with a temporary redirect. A permanent one (301) is better for search engines.
- Needs fixing: Your site still opens without the padlock on http://, so some visitors aren't protected.
- How to fix: Ask your web host to send all http:// visits permanently (a 301 redirect) to https://. Many hosting panels have an "Always use HTTPS" switch.
FAQs
Is this a full certificate test?
No. We check that https works, that a secure connection works for your address, and that http:// sends visitors to https://. We don't grade every encryption setting.
Can you tell me when my certificate runs out?
Not yet. Click the icon just left of the web address in your browser to see the date, and check with your host that automatic renewal is switched on.
Do I need a paid certificate?
Often no. Many hosts include free certificates. What matters is that it matches your address and renews before it runs out.
Can you scan any website?
Only check sites you own or have permission to check. See our Terms.
